This is the amount paid for an 18th-century stamp sold at auction in December 2016. In the 19th century, this stamp came into the possession of a French ship’s doctor who traveled to China and later brought it to Europe. The current owner remains anonymous.

China has strongly protested the sale of this national treasure, but the sale stands—an unknown collector paid 150 million Chinese yuan, equivalent to $22 million or 1.3 billion rubles, making it the most expensive stamp in the world.

A 15-Meter-Tall Rubber Stamp

Next, let’s talk about size. A 49-foot (15-meter) stamp bearing the word "FREE" stands in Cleveland, Ohio. While it’s more of an art installation than a functional stamp, it could theoretically make an impression if lifted and pressed (with city approval). history stampCreated by a pair of sculptors for the Sohio company headquarters, it was meant to honor the freedom fought for during the Civil War, symbolized by a nearby monument. However, the stamp’s installation was halted after Sohio was acquired by British Petroleum, whose director felt the word "FREE" implied corporate oppression.

The stamp spent 15 years in storage before being purchased by the city and placed in a park near the Sohio building, where it remains the world’s largest stamp.
